ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY (Helderberg) - Gordons Bay/Somerset West Area - GIZMO is still waiting. This is not good. Take a visit/tour to explore the fascinating world of hydroelectricity at the Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme and Visitor's Centre.
After which I am sure you will be encouraged to conserve electricity to relieve the heavy burden on our power supply so that we can avoid power outages.
Above is a photo of the Christmas group of Gordon's Bay Residents Association and holiday makers that went on this two hour tour with Liesel, the Eskom hostess. We all were most impressed to see this unique and incredibe Power Station that supplies electricity, which unfortuntly we all just take for granted. Tours are free but bookings are essential: Contact Liesel Sherwood-Adcock, Palmiet Visitor's Centre on 021 859 2690 for more information Email: Liesel Sherwood-Adcock <liesel.sherwood-adcock@eskom.co.za> Important -- Please note: Children of all ages can visit the visitors centre, but only children over the age of 16 years old can go on the tour of the Pumped Storage Power Station Please wear sturdy shoes, no slip-slops or sandals Directions: Take the N2 over Sir Lowry's Pass, pass Steenbras Dam on the right and then 2-3KM further turn right into the Rockview Dam turn-off to the Eskom visitors centre
A poetic film by Gordons bay's very own Riaan Hendricks about the Animal Welfare Society and their struggle to preserve the lives of unwanted companion pets stemming from an over population crisis. Shot locally, thought provoking, stirring stuff. For more info, go to www.indiegogo.com/wilddog

Wine on the Water 19 November 2011
Sun-soaked visitors enjoyed great wines at what has been described by most as the perfect setting at the inaugural Wine on the Water wine show presented by Peter Venter and held at the Villa Via Hotel in Gordon’s Bay this past Saturday, 19 November 2011.
Organisers Jaco Roets and Peter Venter.
Thirty eight wineries participated in the Wine on the Water show organised by Jaco Roets and sponsored by Peter Venter, Villa Via Hotel, Spar Gordon’s Bay, Gordon’s Bay Security and Swift Events. The concept was the brainchild of estate agent, Jaco Roets, who wanted to create an event to showcase Gordon’s Bay and the spectacular views the luxury Villa Via Hotel has to offer.
Hosted on the boardwalk of the Villa Via Hotel more than 500 visitors tasted over 100 wines from both well-established producers such as Fleur du Cap and Rickety Bridge and lesser known wineries such as Usana, The High Road and Mitre’s Edge. Producers hailed from all corners of the South African wine world including Hermanus and Piketberg. Visitors were treated to snacks and had the opportunity to taste the wines in beautiful big complimentary wine glasses. All the wines could be purchased by order form and the wineries enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and new markets they could subject their product to.
To quote one of the visitors “Only you guys (Jaco Roets and Peter Venter) could pull off such a classy wonderful event. Well done! People are going to talk about this one for a long time. It was superbly organized. Great choices of wines. Stunning venue. Such lovely, lovely people attended. Everyone that I chatted to really enjoyed it. What a lovely day!” – Di Nosworthy.
A painting by Eddie Barton was on silent auction and all the proceeds from the auction and ticket sales went to the NSRI showing the commitment of the organisers to give back to the local Gordon’s Bay community.
The organisers hope to make this a yearly event so if you require any information please contact Jaco Roets on 021 856 5050 or wineonthewatershow@gmail.com.

Ashley John Hayes, aged 4 years, born at 900g, and grew to be this amazing young little man. A vibrant, loving, energetic boy, was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer on the 16th July 2011. He had 4 chemo sessions to shrink the mass from 21cm to 8cm, and then went for his operation to have the cancer, kidney and some Adrenal gland. The mass was 385 grams when it was removed. He recovered remarkably fast, and was out of the hospital within 3 days! Then came more news: Subsequent to the histology tests, he has been diagnosed, with Stage 1, but level 3 (aggressive) cancer. This means extremely high risk of spreading further, if not dealt with. Doctors have put him on 27 weeks of triple chemo sessions. Medical aid has not covered all the hospital costs, and off course the care when he is at home also needs to be covered with a full time carer during the day. (his mom has to work). He may not go to school, to avoid any possible infections and or other childhood diseases. He has a twin sister, and an older brother of 10 years, who are warriors and real cowboy/girl in their own right to keep him upbeat. When this is all done, he needs an eye operation, to straighten his eyes.
Ironically, this is in aid for him, and its a dance! He loves dancing and music!
Keep him in your thoughts and prayers, especially when you see little people laugh, play, and dance. He is truly a ray of light!
Thank you for taking an interest.
The Hayes and Burrows family.

Cape leopards – trapped in a residential garden!
Gordons Bay residents were treated to rare sightings of two wild Cape leopards – trapped in a residential garden.
Conservation official Hayley-May Wittridge, the area manager of biodiversity for the Gordons Bay area, said the drama took place off Suikerbossie Drive, high on the mountainside above the imposing multistorey houses which overlook Clarence Drive and False Bay.
A resident called Wittridge’s office yesterday morning to say she had gone downstairs and looked into her garden, only to see two leopards.
“We believe it was most likely a mother and a sub-adult cub,” Wittridge explained.
She and a team had gone to the address.
The garden was densely vegetated, she said, and upon rounding a corner, she had startled the big cats. “The mother let me know that she was not happy,” Wittridge said.
People in the area had then been warned to stay indoors.
“One woman had been about to walk her Maltese terrier and we asked her to please wait,” Wittridge said.
A team of experts had been summoned to be on standby to dart the animals if required, “but we were still confident that they would be able to find an escape route by themselves”.
A team of scouts had been posted for several hours until they were certain the creatures had made their way back up the mountainside into the fynbos which stretches towards the Steenbras Dam.
Wittridge expressed delight at the sightings and said they believed there were at least 11 leopards in the mountains between the Helderberg and across the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which lies between the coastal towns of Gordons Bay, Rooi Els and Kleinmond and the mountains above Grabouw.

The Gordons Bay Business Forum
had cause for celebration this week when the 100th member joined.
Celebrating the 100th member is from left to right: Marot Paulsen, Kevin Wearing, Danie Miller (Chairman), Karin van der Westhuizen, Lester Burrow and Jeanette Loring.
The Gordons Bay Business Forum (GBBF), which started on 10th July 2010, had cause for celebration this week when the 100th member joined. Says chairman Danie Miller, “Perhaps the success of our recent Winter Wonderland and Leapfrog Gordon’s Bay Road Race, has given confidence in the effectiveness of the Forum and has attracted several more members who want to make Gordon’s Bay a great place to live and do business.”
“Members exchange ideas, offer their talents, consult with authorities and organise events to promote the village and thus increase tourism. We support local business and their success results in improved services, more attractive premises and increased employment - thus the entire community benefits!”
“Some incorrectly think that the Forum aims to sweep away the heritage of the village in favour of lucrative development. Our heritage is a beautiful and important asset of Gordon’s Bay and must, where possible, be preserved and restored,” says Danie.
Says Deputy Chair Kevin Wearing, “Our philosophy is positive interaction and inclusiveness so new business members and ideas are welcomed. The current portfolios are: Events, Tourism and Marketing, Security and Police Forum, Town Planning, Heritage and Village Upgrading. If you are passionate about Gordon’s Bay, join the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum and together we can work towards the improvement of our village!”
Membership fees are R100 per year and meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 08h00 at the Boat Angling Clubhouse in Harbour Island (Note, previously meetings were on Thursdays!) Contact Danie Miller: dm@danmil.co.za

Celebrating a very special Mandela Day,
Kathy Hendricks, Frances Adams and Francis Ndaba thank all who donated soup greens and bread to make the soup for the Temperance Town Community and especially for the children who play in the park.
In the heart of Gordon’s Bay
lies a small park, forlorn and forgotten by most of the residents of the town. Just a few people now take a walk up to the duck pond to feed the ducks and geese and occasionally children use the playground.
Mr Theo Pollock, an electrical engineer with the municipality, for whom the park is named, cultivated this open Municipal ground. His vision at the time was to create an eclectic area, half natural growth and the other half cultivated with waterfalls, bridges, a duck pond and flowerbeds. In the past Mr Pollock and his team of helpers diligently maintained all these and, we are told by inhabitants who frequented it, “the park was a joy to stroll in, taking some bread with to feed the ducks.”
Unfortunately, after Mr Pollock’s retirement, the ground fell into disrepair; fences around the pond collapsed, poles from the bridges were stolen and the flowerbeds, left un-watered, died.
No one seemed to notice or care, except for one man, Gustave Ziehl, who for the last 20 years has, at his own expense, repaired the bridges to the best of his ability, re-introduced geese to the pond and fed the ducks. He and his neighbour, Mr Theuns Wilds, hired a digger and deepened the dam so as to provide more water for the birds. Even wild geese returned there each year to breed.
But then, much to his dismay, last month workers from the Municipality arrived, cut down all the reeds and poison-sprayed the area to inhibit any re-growth. “I was very upset,” said Mr Ziehl, “because the reeds were the breeding place for the geese, it also sheltered the chicks and guarded them against stray dogs who can quite easily enter the area because of the damaged fences.”
If you’d like to take the children or grandchildren to feed the ducks and geese, Pollock Park is between Hillside and Ryger Streets. Driving along Sir Lowry’s Road from Faure Marine Drive (towards the N2), turn right at the next road after the traffic lights, into Bredell Road, which will lead you directly to the park. Turn right at the T junction and this will take you around the park.
Are there any more caring folks out there who, like Mr Ziehl, are concerned for the welfare of the park and its birds? Maybe enthusiastic gardeners in Gordon’s Bay would like to adopt a corner of the park and once again cultivate the flowerbeds, repair the bridges and fix the fence. If so, contact us at the Gordon’s Bay Reviews 021 856 3792, and we will liaise with other interested parties.
