Probably the best restaurant in Gordons Bay. Great service, limited menu. Good views (until the crayfish factory is built). Good winelist, excellent homemade chocolate sauce to go with your ice cream!
August 2011
We booked a table for two early evening, sadly no beautiful sunset unlike the night before. Shown to the table by Andrew, unfortunately at the top of the stairwell, so be warned for rising smoke from below...
Lewis was away at a funeral, pity, we missed his pleasant and professional demeanour. We came prepared with our 'specials' clipped out from the local weekly newpspaer, the District Mail, which usually advertises a few platters, combos, lunch specials and on this occasion any starters/desserts for R30 with any main course ordered.
Andrew promptly took our drinks order and arrived with the tasty warm bread and fish pate to nibble on.We had the ready filleted Portugese sardines to share as our starter, with spicy tomato salsa and a small mound of rice.A delicious starter to choose. For mains, we both had the platters from the paper, 200g rump steak plus 4 Queen prawns plus a large portion of calamari served with vegetables and rice at R98. Mine was the calamari and prawn platter, a large 250g portion of fried calamari, 4 Queen prawns, vegetables, rice and sauces, reasonable at R75. A take out box had to be had! We still had room for desserts, lovely chocolate mousse with a squirt of cream and raspberry creme brûlée.
By this time, plenty more customers were piling in and Andrew and his fellow waitron were feeling the pressure from more demanding diners!
A rooibos to finish, after a glass of delicious, but scarce Porcupine Sauvignon Blanc, the bill came to R312.
View from the table
A beautiful early evening in a very windy Gordons Bay, we managed to book a table for two by the window, watching a slow sunset and the usual goings on in the harbour, including lazy seals..
Served by Mei-Li, rather brusque but efficient enough. A basket of warm white bread was brought to the table with homemade salmon pate, which always goes down well. We skipped starters this time and went onto a very filling main course. William chose the 200g Ladies rump steak, with thick potato wedges and vegtables. This was cooked medium rare, so was juicy but rather too fatty(R79) Catherine opted for the curry crusted kingklip, which was delicious, especially with the tinned pineapple underneath, but steeped in a very rich sauce, possibly too overloaded (R125!)
To finish, William chose vanilla ice cream, 3 scoops in an edible biscuit basket with chocolate sauce drizzled over, plus a strawberry for good measure.
I had the coffee americano and the bill. With a bottle of screw top Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc (R95) and two soft drinks, the bottom line was R375.
The place was really busy for a weekday night, lots of parties of locals and tourists alike. Nice to see Lewis still in attendance.
