If you want posh nosh, whilst having a champagne taste with a beer pocket, and you are looking for a place with a bit of atmosphere without that pretentious nonsense - this has to be the place to visit!
Somerset West is not short of decent eateries, however Chez Max is right up with the best, without their stupid prices.
We booked a table for five diners on Thursday evening. Owner Candice Murray told us she could squeeze us in, but not before 8pm. What a beautiful setting this restaurant has - it's hard to imagine you are right in the middle of Somerset West. Smart tables on the patio under canvas umbrellas. About fifty covers inside, midst the fresh decor.
We were shown to our table without fuss, and ordered our drinks. Candice came over to read out the specials. Karen went for the veal, Lyn calves' liver, David kabeljou and Trevor and I settled for the lamb shank. After a very short wait, five beautifully prepared meals were dished up from Scott's kitchen.
No wine list. Just go over to the rack of wines, and pick your fancy. How simple is that?
We all agreed - dinner was excellent. Coffee and desserts were ordered.
The bill was duly presented. R516 plus tip. Excellent value.

A friendly, bright greeting from charming as always, owner Candice. The colourful, yet cosy restaurant was reasonably busy for an autumn weekday - yes, the official opening night of the long awaited World Cup! These diners were definately not football fans!
As to the true SA tradition during this World Cup extravagance, a couple of flags adorned the walls (even a St. George's Cross!).
