New Year’s message – 2013

What happened in 2012?
The Gordon’s Bay Business Forum continued to grow with enthusiastic and dedicated members who did what they could to improve our town
The following are some of the achievements: We had a very successful Winter Wonderland festival, thanks to Margot Paulsen and her team;  Leapfrog  had a successful race, thanks to Kevin Wearing and  Lester  Burrow and the Strand Athletics Club;  Peter Venter Estates had a very successful Wine on the Water Festival at the Villa Via;  Andre Paulsen arranged a most informative lunch at the Villa Via with Nedbank economist Nickey Wiemar as speaker; Alison Rese arranged wonderful monthly Network lunches at various venues; and congratulations to the newly formed Gordon’s Bay Art Group who held  an successful  art exhibition at the Villa Via, thanks to Hanel van Reenen and Nadine McLaggan  and her team;  at the same time we had an exhibition by a group of Gordon’s Bay Crafters
Thanks  to Louis Siewertsen of the Boat Angling Club who hosted many of our General meetings and also to Janice van der Merwe of the Villa Via for hosting our meetings and various functions
We now have 148 members and 20 Associate/honorary members.
We were instrumental in establishing a GB Art Group, are in the process of establishing a GB Hiking Group, a Garden Group and a Friends of the River Group. We are looking at the possibility of a Gordon’s Bay Crafters Group – more news to follow soon.
We have established a link with ShowMe Helderberg and are making major strides in tourism promotion.  We have succeeded in conjunction with the GBRA  to improve the Faure Marine / Sir Lowry’s Pass Road intersection, many thanks to Councillor Johan Middleton , Sean Glass,  Wynand  Buhr and their teams. After many years we succeeded to have the house on Beach road, which was in a bad state of repair, fixed.
We all had a difficult year due to slow growth after of the recession of 2008. Due to the bad economic situation in Europe, our export markets struggled, which had an adverse effect on our economy followed by labour unrest, strikes and political uncertainty.  Being a member of the Bricks economic group,  our growing economic ties with China,  the next economic super power  and  the low value of the Rand, should help our growth.  We had to move out of our comfort zone and had to learn that to do well we have to do make a special effort and to be proactive to do well in business
What can we expect tin 2013
Our slow economy will most probably continue, but helped by the following:  a weak Rand; our ties with the Bricks nations – China, India, Brazil and Russia;  the possibility of gas finds around our coast; shale gas exploration; very large capital works to be undertaken by the Government;  the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as deputy president of the governing party; better management of workers’ demands.
Africa is seen by most international economists as a continent with immense potential and we are regarded as the gateway to Africa. I do believe that we have a golden future awaiting us in South Africa
So “Carpe Diem”, grab the opportunities and make it an exciting and prosperous new year!
In the end the greatest of all are; “faith, hope and love”
Danie Miller – chairperson
