NETWORKING LUNCHEON
By Alison Rese of Super Crew
Super Crew is a relatively new business in Gordon’s Bay. We’d like to dedicate this year to promoting networking, art and culture within the local community. To do this we are working with the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum and hosting a series of monthly networking luncheons. The format intended for these lunches, emulates a curriculum put together by the extremely successful business club I belonged to when I lived in Mallorca, Spain for three years.
The first lunch will be hosted by Le Bay Guest House on the 27th of January. Joe and Elsabe, Le Bay owners, are originally from Johannesburg where they too attended successful networking lunches. They are extremely excited about being the first to host what will hopefully become a similarly successful and popular event here in Gordon’s Bay. To further promote business, the venue will change every month and will be announced at each prior luncheon meeting. Please let me have your name if you’d like to host an event. The next lunch will be on the 24th of February and a venue is not yet planned.
The format of the lunch will be as follows:-
• To give business owners the opportunity of perhaps closing early so they can attend, the three course lunch which includes a glass of wine, will start relatively late - 1330hrs for 1400hrs.
• It is open to both members and non members. Non members pay R10 more which goes directly to the business forum kitty.
• On arrival, guests are given name tags and tickets for two free cocktails. A cash bar is also open
• Seating for the lunch is based on a draw from a hat upon arrival and may not be changed.
• Guests also put their business cards in a jar at the door.
• They then chat and circulate for the next forty five minutes to an hour before being seated for lunch.
• The purpose of placing business cards in the jar, is, that there will be various prize drawings during lunch - providing members with more great opportunities to promote their businesses: Prizes are donated by members and can be either ‘services’ or products. Le Bay for instance, might offer a free night at their guest house – or Super Crew 50% off a training course valued at R6000 or Gordon’s Bay Plastics a set of glasses etc etc. Great freebies always a great way to get people talking!
• A dedicated table is set up at each venue on which members are encouraged to display their brochures, photos or any other kind of physical accoutrements pertaining to their business. This option is only open to members.
• Once seated, during the first ten to fifteen minutes of lunch – or during the last fifteen minutes of circulation time, three members – one being the host member, have the floor for a maximum of three minutes to speak about their business. This can be backed up by a power point presentation or any other visual aids of choice. Three minutes doesn’t sound like a long time, but it really is – and a great way to learn to be succinct, articulate and to the point when promoting who you are and what you do!
• Further on during the lunch, a guest speaker will also have the floor for an appropriate amount of time – not long enough to become boring though - and we do promise to keep the topics interesting!
• We look forward to welcoming all Gordon’s Bay Business Forum members to y the first Super Crew networking luncheon – Friday the 27th of January at Le Bay, 7 Sir Lowry Road, Gordon’s Bay.
• Booking is essential please. Cut off Wednesday 25th January. Please call Alison on 079 591 5314.

Join Indigo Scuba in Gordon’s Bay and Support World Ocean Day
To celebrate World Ocean Day on Saturday, 3 December 2011, Indigo Scuba Diving Centre in Gordon’s Bay will be holding two special dives to raise funds for the Sustainable Seas Trust (SST), a charitable organisation dedicated to the conservation of the South African coastline.
All divers and non-divers are welcome and for every dive booked, Indigo Scuba will donate R45 to the Sustainable Seas Trust. In return, divers will receive a personalised World Ocean Day recognition card which will feature their photo and personal ocean motto.
Non-Divers are welcome to participate and can use this opportunity to support the Sustainable Seas Trust by purchasing their own personalised World Ocean Day recognition card and joining Indigo Scuba for a “boerie braai” at lunchtime.
The first dive will be at Steenbras Deep, 11km from Harbour Island. This breath-taking dive site is home to many rare and unusual marine species and ranges in depth from 17 to 30 metres. The second dive is planned for Steenbras River Mouth. This beautiful reef plays host to many reef fish and an amazing variety of colourful and interesting marine life. This dive site is suitable for all qualified divers.

NSRI Link Festival 2011 Friday 25 November!

Get to Gordon’s Bay for the NSRI Link Festival. This event promises great fun for contestants and spectators alike so come and join in or have a good laugh at the antics. This major fundraising event for the NSRI aims to top last year’s target of R40 000 – all towards saving lives at sea.
Are you gorgeous and charming? Strut down the catwalk on Friday 25 November at the ‘Miss Links’ Competition at Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club. Don’t miss the 'Dingy Race' on Saturday morning. The NSRI, Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club and the Navy challenge each other in this seriously stiff competition, reminiscent of the Oxford / Cambridge race. 'Rubber Duck Racing' takes place in the afternoon in the Old Harbour. This event offers an opportunity for anyone owning a rubber duck to race. (Note: rubber ducks should be motorised and a skipper’s license is required.)
The 'Anything that Floats' is always a blast. ‘Crew’ must be capable swimmers and wear life jackets. On Sunday the 'Around the Cans' sailing event takes place from Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club. Anyone owning a yacht can participate. Non boating types can try the 'Amazing Race' – a fun treasure hunt between two marinas. Contestants should wear a marine inspired outfit (prizes up for grabs for the ‘most inspired’). The festival closes with prize giving and braai in the evening.
South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test Match of Sri Lanka tour of South Africa
Is anyone interested in going to Newlands to watch the Test early January. I think the third day (Thursday 5th Jan) could be the most interesting and the tickets work out at R220 on the grass and R230 for seats. If there's enough interest, I'll get the tickets and book the bus so please let me know if you'd like to come and support the Proteas in the New Year.
Cheers

Summer Events in Gordon's Bay
Gordon’s Bay is celebrating the start of Summer with some glamorous and fun events in November. These events are being organised by each relevant organisation with the support of the Gordon’s Bay Business Forum – everyone working together for the benefit of all.
“Crayfish Season”
Opens on 19 November - Reserve your place at local restaurants to enjoy this exotic sea food - fresh from the ocean!

TAKE SOME TIME TO SEE HARMONY FLATS’ UNIQUE AND IRREPLACEABLE BIODIVERSITY
Says Lynn Brown: 'Harmony Flats may LOOK like nothing - but it is SO worth a visit. I spent a morning there last year on a guided walk and we saw wonderful flowers, which is so much more interesting when you have a guide with you. And it's right here in Gordon's Bay on the Dennehof Road.'
The staff of Harmony Flats Nature Reserve, together with Gordon’s Bay Friends of the Environment Group and members of the Harmony Flats Working Group, will be offering guided walks at Harmony Flats Nature Reserve during this year’s spring season. Walks will take place every Tuesday and Thursday during September and October 2011.
Harmony Flats Nature Reserve is one of the over 30 natural sites managed by the City of Cape Town. It comprises 9 hectares of unique and critically endangered Lourensford alluvium fynbos, making it a ‘diamond in the rough’ which shares its treasures during the spring time when it bursts into a beautiful display of unique and interesting flowers.
This largely unknown jewel is home to more than 210 different plant species of which more over 20 are threatened. By offering spring walks to the public we hope to raise environmental awareness among residents in the area. The walks will also offer a fun filled activity for the community to participate in. The conservation of Cape Town’s biodiversity is not possible without the support of Capetonians and we are hoping that through awareness, the nature reserve will receive the support that is needed.
The spring walks will start at 10:00 and should finish by 12:00. A small donation of R10 per person will be charged and bookings must be made in advance.
Dates for the walks are as follows; September 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 25, 27 and 29; and October 6, 11, 13, and 18. For further enquiries please contact Elzanne Burger or Sabelo Lindani at (021) 856 5605.
